NCID Announces Scholar-In-Residence Program

The National Center for Institutional Diversity is excited to announce a new NCID Scholar-in-Residence program beginning Fall 2019. The NCID Scholar-in-Residence program provides an opportunity for diversity scholars to pursue their research and writing at the University of Michigan. Scholars will be a part of a vibrant intellectual community and have the opportunity to interact with junior faculty and postdoctoral fellows, senior NCID faculty fellows, graduate students, as well as colleagues in their affiliated academic units.

This residential fellowship specifically supports scholars doing work to further our understanding of historical and contemporary social issues related to identity, difference, culture, representation, power, oppression, and inequality, with the goal of advancing equity and inclusion throughout our society. Our diversity research and scholarship framework takes an inclusive approach to methodology and discipline — including qualitative and quantitative methods, multi- and inter-disciplinary approaches across social sciences and the arts and humanities, as well as the use of both traditional and non-traditional disciplinary modes of inquiry and methodologies.

Scholars will be selected for their accomplishments as diversity scholars/researchers, the alignment of their proposed work with NCID mission and priorities, as well as support from a U-M department. As part of the fellowship, NCID scholars-in-residence are expected to actively engage with the NCID and U-M community, present their work at a campus colloquium/brown bag, and participate in selected NCID activities given their scholarly interests. As this is a residential fellowship, NCID scholars-in-residence are expected to be on campus at least 75% of university business days.

ELIGIBILITY

PhD (or comparable terminal degree) awarded before June 30, 2016

STIPEND/AWARD

50% of 9-month salary, up to $75,000 (please note that this stipend does not cover any benefits)

• Proposal describing the work the scholar will engage in during their time at NCID/U-M, including potential collaborators (maximum of 5 pages single-spaced, excluding up to 2 pages references/figures/tables)
• Letter of support from U-M department chair. All departments/units at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor are eligible. Strong letters will include:
  • Enthusiasm about scholar’s participation in academic community
  • Areas of potential connection and collaboration with department members
  • Detailed plan for support to connect scholar with departmental community (e.g., office space, inclusion in department colloquium series and similar)
