Faculty Symposium on Anti-Racism Research & Scholarship at the University of Michigan

The Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR), the Anti-Racism Collaborative at the National Center for Institutional Diversity (ARC/NCID), and the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (ODEI) invite faculty and postdoctoral fellows at the University of Michigan (U-M) to a two-day, in-person symposium exploring anti-racism research and scholarship conducted by U-M faculty. In March 2021, a campus wide focus on anti-racism research and scholarship was galvanized through the development of the Anti-Racism Collaborative (ARC) at the National Center for Institutional Diversity (NCID) — as part of the provost’s anti-racism initiatives — and the launch of the two-year Anti-Racism Grants program by the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) in partnership with NCID. The complementary and shared goals between these two efforts include fostering innovative and interdisciplinary research that promotes racial justice and racial equity, supporting a community of anti-racism scholars, and amplifying the anti-racism research expertise among U-M faculty and researchers. The Faculty Symposium on Anti-Racism Research & Scholarship at U-M is a convening of faculty and postdoctoral fellows who seek to challenge systemic racism through their research and scholarship, want to be in community with faculty addressing systemic racism from intersectional perspectives or other disciplinary fields of study, and/or want to engage in dialogue around institutional supports for faculty who engage in anti-racism research and scholarship. We also welcome U-M students and staff who are interested in supporting the goals of the Faculty Symposium to encourage connections and community among those who engage in anti-racism research & scholarship at U-M.

The program content and structure of the Faculty Symposium on Anti-Racism Research & Scholarship at U-M were designed to achieve the following objectives: Share examples of innovative, interdisciplinary anti-racism research and scholarship conducted by U-M faculty. Facilitate discussion on what it means to conduct anti-racism research and scholarship. Build a sense of community and reduce disciplinary silos among anti-racism faculty researchers from different departments, schools, colleges, and fields of study. It is our hope that these objectives will bolster and catalyze innovative research and scholarship efforts among U-M faculty to address systemic racism and work toward a more racially equitable and just society.

The single session format (i.e., no concurrent sessions) will allow participants to learn about current anti-racism work being conducted by their faculty colleagues from a variety of disciplines and to engage with each other in a collective dialogue on what it means to conduct anti-racism research and scholarship. The symposium will also feature remarks by campus leadership, including a lunchtime conversation on the challenges and opportunities of facilitating institutional and systemic change to support anti-racism scholars and their scholarship. This is an in-person event to encourage participation, networking, and connection. We are looking for ways to continue this conversation in other formats and for other groups in the future. CART (Communication Access Real-time Translation) services will be provided for every session. Food and Refreshments Beverages and refreshments will be available throughout both days of the event. Lunch for those registered will include gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan options. COVID-19 Precautions Please stay home if you have been exposed to COVID-19 in the last 14 days or are showing COVID-19 symptoms. Anyone who has had close contact with a person who has COVID-19 should also stay home and monitor their health. All members of our campus community who enter campus buildings and facilities are encouraged to use ResponsiBLUE to check themselves for COVID-19 symptoms. Masks are optional for indoor spaces on the University of Michigan campuses with the exception that masks remain required in patient care areas (e.g Michigan Medicine, University Health Service and the Dental School clinical areas), and at U-M Covid-19 testing sites. Accessibility Information CART (Communication Access Real-time Translation) services will be provided for each session. In an effort to make our event welcoming to those with allergies and sensitivities to chemical fragrances, we encourage attendees to refrain from wearing scented products such as perfume, cologne, and fragrant personal care products at the event. Michigan League Building Info Ramp access is available at the south entrance (circle driveway) on N. University Ave. The gender inclusive & accessible restroom is available on the 3rd floor, Room 343T. One public elevator is available. North and south stairs go to all floors but center stairs only go to the 2nd floor. Building Information The Reflection Room, 3rd floor, room 347, is also used as a personal room for breastfeeding parents. Members of the university community can gain access with their MCard. Contact the Building Manager at the Information Desk for information on securing the space for lactation purposes.​ The room at the League includes a table, two chairs, and an outlet. Parking and Public Transportation Parking Metered street parking is available around the Michigan League.The Maynard Street Parking Structure (at E. Liberty Street) is open to the public. It is located 3 blocks west of the Michigan League. There are 14 accessible parking spaces available. The Palmer Drive Parking Structure, located on Washtenaw Avenue, has visitor parking in addition to campus permitted parking. There are 16 accessible spaces available. The Ann Arbor Downtown Development Authority webpage offers information on parking in downtown Ann Arbor, a downtown walking map, accessible parking in the area, and parking for electric vehicles. University bus routes and schedules are available online. Public transportation information for the City of Ann Arbor is available online.
