The Center for Racial Justice in the Ford School of Public Policy and the Anti-Racism Collaborative at the National Center for Institutional Diversity (NCID) are excited to present our new Racial Justice and Anti-Racism Collaborative Visiting Scholars Program!
We welcome our first visiting scholar, Dr. Whitney Pirtle, to the University of Michigan's Ann Arbor campus on February 19–23, 2024. Dr. Pirtle is an associate professor of sociology at the University of California, Merced and received her PhD from Vanderbilt University. Dr. Pirtle is a trained sociologist with broad interdisciplinary expertise in critical race theory, social inequality, health disparities, health equity, Black feminist sociology and praxis, and mixed methodologies.
We have set aside two lunchtime opportunities for Dr. Pirtle to engage with members of the Anti-Racism Collaborative community. These conversations will enable members of the Anti-Racism Collaborative and those committed to producing anti-racism scholarship to hear about how a mid-career scholar has embarked upon their scholarly and professional journey. The discussions will address how to confront obstacles and challenges in the pursuit of such scholarship, realize and take advantage of unique opportunities to do this work, and pursue emotional and intellectual security while doing so.
On both dates, following the Q&A, there will be an open hour for individuals to have a 20-minute 1:1 discussion with Dr. Pirtle from 2:15–3:00 p.m.
Lunch: 12:30 p.m.
Q&A: 1:00–2:00 p.m. (targeted to early career faculty): Conversation with Dr. Pirtle about professional challenges and opportunities for conducting and publishing anti-racism research facilitated by Dr. Alford Young, Jr.
Lunch: 12:30 p.m.
Q&A: 1:00–2:00 pm (targeted to graduate students): Conversation with Dr. Pirtle about her academic journey as an anti-racism scholar facilitated by Dr. Alford Young, Jr.
