Sharmilee Nyenhuis, MD, FAAAAI is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Medicine at the University of Chicago and practices the subspecialty of Allergy and Immunology. Dr. Nyenhius went to medical school at the University of Illinois at Chicago and stayed on for a residency in internal medicine. She completed a fellowship in Allergy and Immunology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and then joined the faculty at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She served as the Director of the Allergy/Asthma/Immunology Program and Section Chief of Allergy at the Jesse Brown VA. In 2022, she joined the faculty in the Section of Allergy/Immunology at the University of Chicago and was recently appointed Associate Chair of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Chicago. She has been well funded for her work in addressing asthma disparities in underserved populations including older adults, minority children and adults with asthma and severe asthma by NHLBI, PCORI and foundation grants. Dr Nyenhuis' research program currently focuses on testing health promotion interventions and evaluating the implementation potential of these interventions.
Current Work
Dr. Nyenhuis' scholarship continues to focus on health promotion interventions such as physical activity and dietary change in adults with asthma. She has recently expanded her work to explore the impact of the home environment on asthma and sinonasal conditions using ground-breaking technology to measure home air quality and correlate it in real-time with patient symptoms.
