Visionary educator committed to equity, justice, and racial repair. Shahid has established groundbreaking initiatives addressing anti-Black racism in higher education both inside and outside of the classroom. As of June 2022, Dr. Shahid serves as Director of the Trotter Multicultural Center at the University of Michigan. Founded as a result of Black student activism, Trotter serves as a site of intersectional liberation and community-building on campus. As director, Shahid is responsible for providing strategic direction and helping to ensure that the center continues to live into its mission. Dr. Shahid joined Trotter after spending a year of intentional focus on faculty development on equity-focused teaching and trauma-informed pedagogy with U-M's Center for Research on Learning and Teaching. Dr. Shahid has over fifteen years of experience in higher education at private and public institutions.
Current Work
Dr. Shahid's scholarship explores anti-black racism in higher education and modalities for developing healing centered learning opportunities inside and outside of the college classroom. She is invested in research regarding the intersections of race, spirituality and leadership particularly in response to racial healing in higher education. One current project involves collaboration with Diasporic Soul to deliver non-traditional racial healing and leadership development pilgrimages to Senegal, West Africa for college students of African descent.
