Christi-Anne Castro received her PhD in ethnomusicology from the University of California, Los Angeles. Her book, Musical Renderings of the Philippine Nation (2011, Oxford University Press), received the 2012 Global Filipino Literary Award for Nonfiction. She has had a lifelong affiliation with the Filipino American community group based in Massachusetts, Iskwelahang Pilipino, and continues as a musical consultant to their rondalla.
Current Work
Castro's scholarship has been on cultural nationalism, music and US imperialism, folkloric performing arts in the Philippines, and Filipino American and Asian American musicking. Her ethnomusicology courses range from regional to topic-oriented ones, helping to diversify the curriculum in a Western music conservatory-style school. She is interested in the many connections between music and politics as well as between music and wellness.
