Dwight Fontenot is the associate director for academic and student affairs at the Comprehensive Studies Program (CSP) at the University of Michigan, and an adjunct member of the faculty of the Department of Psychology. At CSP, he oversees the largest student success program on campus. He received his BA degree at Louisiana State University, a Master's of Science in Psychological Methodology; a Master's of Science in Industrial and Operations Engineering; and a doctoral degree in Cognitive Psychology all from the University of Michigan. His major research interest include study of the psychological constructs of optimism, pessimism, religion and their relationships to self-esteem and academic performance; predictors of academic success for students of color; and the structure of memory and its impact on learning.
Current Work
Dr. Fontenot's research focuses on the cognitive and non-cognitive variables that impact college success, especially for marginalized (1st generation, low SES, underrepresented students of color) populations. He studies the impact of positive community development on retention, persistence and graduation.
