His research focuses on developing and evaluating novel strategies for using patient-facing health technology to improve the accessibility and quality of care for patients with chronic illnesses. Much of this work focuses on the use of mHealth monitoring systems in socioeconomically vulnerable populations in the US and low-income countries of Latin America. He has been the PI on multiple VA, NIH, and AHRQ-funded randomized trials of disease management services supported by communication tools for patients and informal caregivers. Ongoing trials include: two NIH trials using mobile health support for self-management and caregiver assistance among patients with diabetes and with depression in safety-net health systems, a trial of a depression management mobile health system in Bolivia and Colombia, and program designed to assist people recently released from incarceration. The theme running through these projects is the goal of developing services for communities with VAST needs (i.e., p
