Laura Lein, PhD is Katherine Reebel Collegiate Professor at the School of Social Work at the University of Michigan in 2009, as well as Professor in the Department of Anthropology. She is listed as a faculty expert for the new University of Michigan Poverty Solutions Initiative. She served as Dean of the School of Social Work 2009-2016. She came to Michigan from the University of Texas at Austin School of Social Work where she taught for 24 years. Prior to that she served as director of the Wellesley College Center for Research on Women. Lein received her PhD and MA in social anthropology from Harvard University and her BA in anthropology and sociology from Swarthmore College.
Current Work
She is currently working on projects related to low-income women and health, homelessness, and low-income non-residential fathers. In several of her recent studies, she has explored the difficulties people in extreme poverty face in maintaining the identification required for registering to vote and voting. She is also active in the Social Work Grand Challenges, and is acting as co-lead for the challenge to reduce extreme economic inequality.
