Chesler is an Emeritus Professor in Sociology and faculty in the Intergroup Relations Program (IGR) at the University of Michigan. He is the author/co-author of eight books and over 200 articles, most recently including: Faculty Identities & the Challenge of Diversity (w/ A. Young, Jr.), Challenging Racism in Higher Education (w/ J. Crowfoot & A. Lewis), and Intergroup Dialogues in Higher Education (w/ X. Zuniga, B. Nagda & A. Cytron-Walker.As a faculty member, Mark has taught highly interactive and experiential courses in the Sociology of Education, Social Change, Qualitative Research Methods, Participatory Action Research, Community Service Learning, and Training Facilitators for Intergroup Dialogues. Mark has also conducted research on the social psychological experience of teens and families dealing with childhood cancer, and has been president of the US-Based Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation and of The International Confederation of Childhood Cancer Parent Organizations. He is the father of two adult daughters and grandfather of three girls and two boys.
Current Work
Chesler's current research focuses on three areas: Intergroup dialogues, especially interracial dialogues, with a parallel concern about whiteness (and maleness) and intra-white group dialogues; Organizational change (social climates and academic policies) around race and gender equity in higher education, especially but not solely in the STEM fields; Teaching and pedagogical strategies/innovations focused on diversity and inclusion in diverse classrooms.
