About
Paulette Vincent-Ruz is a postdoctoral associate in chemistry education at the University of Michigan (Potowatomi Land). Vincent-Ruz graduated with a bachelor of science in chemical engineering from the National Autonomous the University of Mexico (Mexica Land) and obtained my PhD in learning sciences and policy from the University of Pittsburgh (Monongahela Land). Thanks to her unique combination of chemistry disciplinary knowledge and education, she became the first chemistry education reseacher named a Future Leader in Chemistry in the year 2019 by CAS.Paulette's research perspective is informed by her background: "I identify as a Queer Latinx cis-woman of color. I was born and raised a settler colonialist on the rightful lands of the Mexica Tribes. I acknowledge that they, and indigenous peoples of the south, are the first and rightful inhabitants of the lands and waters that are now called Mexico. English is my second language, and I have an accent when I speak English."
Current Work
Paulette's research aims to understand how systemic disadvantages hinder the success of marginalized students in Chemistry and STEM disciplines. Specifically, she examine how these barriers to access, opportunity, and social messaging impact their science-related attitudes, engagement with the learning environment, and choices. Her research program has so far resulted in ten peer-reviewed articles, seven with me as corresponding/first author (227 citations, h-index=7). She is currently working on 1) Guidelines for equitable methodological practices, 2) Theory development and practical applications of a framework to support the development of equitable interventions to support marginalized students, and 3) Developing equitable mentoring practices and support the careers of marginalized students in academia.
