Steven Lonn is the director of enrollment research and data management in the Office of Enrollment Management at the University of Michigan (U-M). In this role, Lonn designs and conducts policy research and is responsible for the high-level management and communication of enrollment data. Leading a team of graduate and undergraduate students with faculty and staff partners, his research agenda is focused on higher education access, affordability, transition, and student success.Prior to his current position, Lonn served as assistant director for assessment and evaluation in U-M's Office of Digital Education & Innovation, providing planning, direction, and coordination for assessment and evaluation activities. Lonn's experience at the U-M a also includes working as a research specialist, analytics specialist, and assistant director of the Learning, Education, and Design Lab at U-M.Lonn earned his doctorate in learning technologies and master of arts in educational technology from U-M. He also holds a bachelor of arts in psychology and religious studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
Current Work
Dr. Lonn's research currently focuses on the following primary areas: College affordability and transition for low-income students. Focusing on U-M students receiving the HAIL Scholarship and those who qualify for the Go Blue Guarantee, this research seeks to understand how students socially and academically transition to a highly selective research institution and how their experiences can inform and improve institutional practices and policies in order to better support the broader low-income student population.Transfer student transition and success. This research project, in partnership with faculty partners in the School of Education, seeks to understand the unique challenges of students who transfer to a highly selective research institution from other institutions and how these challenges might be addressed to improve student success metrics, particularly time to graduation, retention, and student performance.Federal work study: optimizing aid for student success. The federal work study (FWS) program allows for a great deal of institutional discretion. This research project seeks to understand the history of FWS offers and student utilization of their awards, focusing on differences across demographics, major schools and colleges, and types of work positions and their affect on short- and long-term student outcomes. Ultimately, the aim for this project is to affect future optimization of how FWS is distributed and awarded to students at U-M.
