About
Shi-Yan Chao is a research assistant professor in the the Department of Visual Studies at Lingnan University. He holds a PhD in Cinema Studies from New York University, and was an INTERACT postdoctoral fellow in the Weatherhead East Asian Institute at Columbia University. He has taught at NYU, Columbia, and Hong Kong Baptist University. He is author of Queer Representations in Chinese-language Film and the Cultural Landscape (Amsterdam University Press, 2020) and articles on various subjects.
Current Work
Dr. Chao's scholarship mainly fits in the domain of film and media studies, intersected by a number of focuses. As his publications and teaching show, they include Chinese-language cinemas, gender/queer studies, documentary films, contemporary film/media industries, early film histories, and the genres of fantasy, horror, martial arts and melodrama. He is currently writing on queer indies from Taiwan and Hong Kong. His two upcoming cooperative projects shall focus on Taiwan experimental film and Asian queer cinemas.
