Dr. Madell holds a PhD in local economic development, business support and poverty reduction (University of Cape Town). Other qualifications include a master's of city and regional planning (UCT); a MSc in local economic development from University of Glasgow as well as a BAHons in geography from the University of the Western Cape. Dr. Madell has more than twenty years of experience as consultant within the fields of local economic development, spatial planning, sustainable livelihoods, urban renewal, and urban growth management. He is an academic who has travelled extensively worldwide and participated in scholarships in Miami and Detroit.

Developing local economic development theory (LED); exploring the disjuncture between state economic policies and community survival strategies; local and international case studies; building economic institutional capacity and informal economic activity; regional economic development; framing urban planning functions and responsibilities for provincial spheres of government; responding to challenges facing informal economic activities in urban townships
