Current Work
Dr. Mallet-Salazar is currently working on a project to determine the role of social services in the assimilation of Latino immigrants in France, Spain, and the United States. The project seeks to understand how immigrants interact with social assistance programs and how experiences with these programs help or hinder their assimilation into the host society. Specifically, this project seeks to comparatively analyze the degree of discrimination that Latino immigrants from these three countries are facing and the consequences of such discrimination on their assimilation. This research is based on an original database of semi-structured interviews with Latino immigrants in the three countries (70 interviews in the United Sta,EST 70 interviews in Spain, and 70 interviews in France). The originality of this research relies on the international comparison between three countries and the results thereof will offer a better understanding the complexities of immigrants’ assimilation into the host society.
