Steven Alvarez is an assistant professor of English at St. John's University. He is the author of Brokering Tareas: Mexican Immigrant Families Translanguaging Homework Literacies (SUNY Press, 2017) and Communities Literacies en Confianza: Learning from Bilingual After-School Programs (National Council of Teachers of English, 2017).
Current Work
Steven Alvarez's current research explores the migrations of foodways among Mexican immigrants in the US South and in New York City. The research project titled "taco literacy" examines how foodway narratives of Mexican migration demonstrate a literacy of care for transnational trajectories. This research will explore stories of bilingual learning, literacy practices, and community resiliences through the prism of food.
