About
Francisco J. Villegas is an assistant professor in the Department of Anthropology and Sociology at Kalamazoo College. He completed his PhD in sociology of education in 2014 at the University of Toronto. His research focuses on the intersection of race and immigration status, particularly how they are employed to maintain borders to membership. Currently, his work analyzes the employment of local governments to challenge illegalization, specifically in the development of a County ID.
Current Work
While the border is often imagined as defining the boundaries between countries, methods of bordering — determining who belongs according to immigration status — are often used inside the country. My research focuses on schooling and identification cards as "fundamental" elements of our society that often divide communities according to immigration status. I focus on the ways communities resist this illegalization, including the alternatives they mobilize to accomplish.
