Current Work
Dr. Sevelius' scholarship has focused on improving the health and wellness of transgender people and communities. Their work seeks to expand understanding of the factors that improve the lives of transgender people, specifically transgender women, transgender people of color, and those affected by or living with HIV. Using community-based and community-led approaches, Dr. Sevelius’ projects are intertwined with, informed by, and ultimately led by local transgender communities. An example of the types of programs that Dr. Sevelius develops in collaboration with transgender communities include a group-level sexual health intervention for transgender women of color called 'Sheroes' that focuses on empowerment, community building, and gender affirmation. Other examples include a health navigation program for transgender women re-entering the community after a period of incarceration ('Girlfriends Connect'), a peer-facilitated counseling program to increase treatment engagement and medication adherence among transgender women living with HIV ('Healthy Divas'), and a PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV prevention) demonstration project in Oakland and Sacramento, California, ('TRIUMPH') as part of the first trans-specific PrEP initiative globally. Dr. Sevelius is in the process of launching a new federally-funded sexual health project for couples focused on transgender women and their partners.
