About
Lucius Couloute is an assistant professor of sociology at Suffolk University. His primary research interests involve race and racism, employment, organizations, and systems of criminalization. His current research investigates the structural barriers and cultural ideas that permeate a northeastern prisoner reentry system. With the Prison Policy Initiative, Lucius has also published three policy reports on the housing, educational, and employment barriers that formerly incarcerated people face.
Current Work
Dr. Couloute's research uncovers various barriers that people face after being released from prison, including issues related to discrimination due to a criminal record, social isolation, and a lack of coordinated post-imprisonment resources. Dr. Couloute's research also illustrates the power of cultural ideas — like those related to meritocracy — in shaping the reentry experience. One of Dr. Couloute's newest projects examines the role of place-based social and economic factors in determining community incarceration rates.
