About
Dione Moultrie King is an associate professor in the department of Social Work at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. King received her PhD and MSW from the University of Georgia. She credits her teaching experiences with solidifying her decision to pursue graduate studies in social work. Dr. King's long-standing commitment to disadvantaged, vulnerable, and marginalized populations is evidenced through her professional and research experiences working with children and families in juvenile justice, child welfare, education, nonprofit, and homeless/transitional housing settings. Dr. King's research interests include adverse childhood experiences, adolescent health-risk behavior and related outcomes (i.e. behavioral health and sexual health), and health disparities.
Current Work
Dr. King's scholarship examines health behaviors such as dating violence, substance use, early and risky sexual practices, the application of ethnic and culturally relevant theories, and intervention/prevention programming that impact the lives of Black adolescents and young adults. Additionally, Dr. King is interested in the impact of social health determinants (e.g. the conditions where individuals live, work, and play) on behavioral health and sexual and reproductive health risk behaviors in African-American youth, young adults, and families. Currently, she is exploring sexual and reproductive health of Black adolescents and young adults to understand the role of health determinants in sexual and reproductive health disparities in order to improve behavioral health outcomes.
