About
Daniel S. Gardner, Ph.D., LCSW is an associate professor and chair of the health concentration at the Silberman School of Social Work, Hunter College, CUNY. Dr. Gardner has over 30 years of clinical, administrative, policy, and research experience in health and mental health, specializing in social work practice with individuals and families living with chronic and advanced illness. He is a Hartford Faculty Scholar in Geriatric Social Work, a founding board member of the Social Work in Hospice & Palliative Care Network (SWHPN), Research Director of the Hartford-Silberman Center of Excellence in Diverse Aging, and a Fellow of the Social Research, Practice & Policy Section of the Gerontological Society of America (GSA). Dr. Gardner's community-based research explores adaptation to serious illness in later life, with the goal of improving palliative and end-of-life care for older adults and their caregivers.
Current Work
Dr. Gardner's current research explores barriers and facilitators to accessing palliative care and pain management among diverse community-dwelling elders in East and Central Harlem. Dr. Gardner’s research has been funded by grants from the National Institute of Aging, the National Institute of Medical and General Medical Sciences, the Health Resources & Services Administration, the American Cancer Society, the Fan Fox & Leslie R. Samuels Foundation, and the John A. Hartford Foundation.
