Dr. Jason Laker is a tenured, full professor in the Department of Counselor Education in the Lurie College of Education at San Jose State University (SJSU). Prior to joining the Department of Counselor Education, Dr. Laker served as the vice president for student affairs at SJSU, leading a Division with over 28 departments, 350 staff, and $68M in combined budgets. Dr. Laker has 25 years of successful and progressively more complex academic and administrative leadership experiences in student and academic affairs, at six distinct institutional environments (e.g., research, public, private, large, small, religious, liberal arts) in the U.S. and Canada (he is originally from Michigan). He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Arizona's Center for the study of higher education, an M.A. in community counseling from Adams State College (CO), and a B.S. in organizational communication from Central Michigan University.
Current Work
Dr. Laker continues to publish on men & masculinity studies, gender identity development, and college student development theory. He is the editor-in-chief for the Journal of Men's Studies. Dr. Laker has developed and/or taught courses in several disciplines, particularly on subjects of community and identity, and has received several awards for his teaching, research, and service. Most recently, he served as the 2013 scholar-in-residence for the School and College Organization for Prevention Educators, received the 2012 Newly Published Research Award from the Men and Masculinities Knowledge Community of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, and selected for the American College Personnel Association Foundation's 2010 class of Diamond Honorees (ACPA describes this award as recognizing "outstanding and sustained contributions to higher education and to student affairs.")He has presented many keynotes and invited sessions at professional conferences on student affairs and development issues, gender, community leadership and related topics, and has a significant publication record in these areas including two edited volumes -- Masculinities in Higher Education (with Tracy Davis, Routledge, 2011) and Canadian Perspectives on Men and Masculinities (Oxford University Press, 2011).He has published two Books (June, 2014) from Palgrave Macmillan UK: Laker, Naval, & Mrnjaus (Eds.): Citizenship, Democracy and Higher Education in Europe, Canada and the U.S.; and Civic Pedagogies in Higher Education: Teaching for Democracy in Europe, Canada and the U.S.
