Ryan Alaniz is a professor of sociology at Cal Poly State University, San Luis Obispo, where he teaches courses on international political economy, social change, incarceration, and social inequality. He has volunteered for several community-based, national, and international organizations that are dedicated to improving the lives of disaster survivors, marginalized groups, and people incarcerated.
Current Work
His areas of research focus on disaster recovery and resettlement, community development, and education in jail/prison. Dr. Alaniz’s publications include his book “From Strangers to Neighbors: Post-Disaster Resettlement and Community Building in Honduras” (University of Texas Press 2017) and various chapter and article collaborations with the United Nations University-Institute for Environment and Human Security, the White House, and the Natural Hazards Center.
