Dr. Deshunna Monay Ricks was born and raised in West Fresno, California. She was raised by her parents up until age five and then she was raised in foster care from age 8-18 by her paternal grandmother, Hester Hensley. Although experiencing many trails, tribulations, and adversities she was self-determined to become successful. Dr. Ricks has a master's in social work and a credential in counseling from California State University Fresno. She has a doctorate in education from Brandman University. She recently launched her business I Have Value, LLC. The mission of I Have Value, LLC is to equip individuals to embrace their value so that they can be a gift to themselves in live in wellness each day. Her purpose and mission in life is to breathe life on others in order that they may be encouraged to be a better version of themselves daily. Dr. Ricks is a proud single parent of Va'Ron Mitchell; a handsome young man who has changed her life for the better. Most importantly, she is a child of the Most High God who has made all things possible for her.
Current Work
This scholarship includes a qualitative inquiry regarding the lived experiences of female foster youth alumni who are single parents that have master's degrees. The scholarship will focus on supports accessed and barriers experienced throughout their collegiate journey. This scholarship includes a qualitative case study analysis regarding the supports accessed among male foster youth alumni that have graduate degrees. This scholarship will focus on the institutional supports and noninstitutional supports accessed throughout their programs of study.
