Jama Shelton, MSW, PhD is an assistant professor at the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College and the chief strategy officer for the True Colors Fund. Dr. Shelton?s research examines the needs and experiences of LGBTQ youth experiencing homelessness and the service providers with whom they work. In particular, Dr. Shelton is interested in identifying and addressing systemic barriers rooted in hetero/cisgenderism that frequently constrain the successful transition out of homelessness for LGBTQ youth and young adults.
Current Work
Dr. Shelton is a member of the REALYST, a multi-disciplinary, multi-site collaborative of academic and community partners that uses research to inform innovative policies, programs and services aimed at ending homelessness and housing instability among young people. Affiliated with the Silberman Center for Sexuality and Gender, they also examine cisgenderism and implicit transbias in social work education. Dr. Shelton is looking forward to partnering with New York City based organizations serving transgender and gender expansive youth experiencing homelessness on the development of a participatory action research project.
