Current Work
For last four years, Dr. Singh has been researching in the broad area of gender and IT and focusing on the experiences of women in Open Source Software (OSS). The overarching goal of her research is to reduce barriers for participation in OSS for women and other marginalized groups. This research has wider applications in the overall software engineering field. Dr. Singh's approach with this project is to understand, investigate, and report the current experiences of women (and minorities) in online OSS communities and offer solutions to mitigate the undesirable online abuse, sexism, and discrimination that they face routinely. One approach to better navigate this harassment is to create "safe spaces" for seeking, receiving and providing social support. Currently, in OSS there are very few projects that support such online spaces for women (less than 3%). Recently, she published an article describing the types of woman focused spaces that exist in OSS projects, discovering that mailing lists are the most common type of woman focused spaces.
