About
Dr. Kohel received her BA in psychology and piano performance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, her MA in student personnel administration in higher education from New York University, and her PhD in interdisciplinary studies, with concentrations in counseling psychology and social psychology, from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Before becoming a professor, Dr. Kohel was employed as a student personnel administrator: advising individual students on academic, career, and personal concerns; overseeing the development of student organizations, student leaders, and student staff; and facilitating diversity programming. Dr. Kohel's research interests include teaching for multicultural competence and exploring the role of social categorization in social inequality.
Current Work
Dr. Kohel’s research interests include teaching for multicultural competence and exploring the role of social categorization in social inequality. Dr. Kohel is especially interested in exploring the effectiveness of different kinds of activities intended to increase awareness, knowledge and/or skills regarding social and cultural differences. Her research also focuses on ways in which different social categorizations, e.g., having a salient racial/ethnic identity, having a salient United States identity, having both a salient racial/ethnic identity and United States identity, may facilitate and/or hinder social stratification.
