Devika Dibya Choudhuri is currently a professor in the graduate program in Counseling at Eastern Michigan University. A licensed professional counselor in Michigan and Connecticut with 20 years of experience working with individuals, couples, families, and groups, she is a certified eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapist, specializing in working with refugee populations, sexual assault and abuse trauma survivors, and immigrant and multicultural populations. She carries the National Certified Counselor, Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor, and Approved Clinical Supervisor credentials. She is also a certified coach, consultant, and frequent presenter on cultural competence, diversity and ethical issues, as well as trauma and loss. She teaches courses such as cross cultural counseling, multicultural counseling, trauma, grief and loss, counseling skills, counselor supervision, group work, couple and family, and counseling women, as well as LGBTQ populations. Her research and publications have focused on the areas of historical trauma, cultural competence with trauma, multicultural client issues, counselor supervision and pedagogy. She has published a textbook on multicultural counseling and edited a set of eight monographs in the series, LGBTQIA issues in Collegiate settings, as well as published over 30 journal articles and book chapters, and over 50 national and international presentations and workshops. She completed her undergraduate work at Smith College, her MS in counseling from the University of Vermont, and her PhD in counselor education and supervision from Syracuse University.
Current Work
Currently, Dibya Choudhuri's projects include a forthcoming edited text on Fundamentals of Group Process Observation, as well as development and validation of a Historical Trauma Inventory. She is conducting cultural competence training for trauma-informed care with area therapists to develop best practices, and volunteers to assist with Humanitarian projects as an EMDR therapist, and has served concerned populations in both Oxford, MI and Michigan State University in the wake of shootings. In addition, she has developed Implicit Bias Training for Healthcare providers for the State of Michigan, DEIJ training for Faculty in the Classroom,
