About
Guillermo Ortega is an assistant professor of higher education at Idaho State University. He is a first-generation college athlete who was raised in a Spanish-speaking household. He earned his PhD in higher education leadership and policy studies from the University of Houston. Prior to joining Idaho State University, he served as a post-doctoral fellow at Iowa State University where he helped implement a new college-going initiative for Latinx youth and families. His research uses qualitative and quantitative methods to examine diversity and equity within intercollegiate athletics, students from underrepresented groups, and organizational structures. His research has been featured in the Journal of Diversity in Higher Education, Innovative Higher Education, International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education, Journal of Athlete Development and Experiences, and Journal of Hispanic Higher Education.
Current Work
Dr. Ortega's research examines student identities, organizational context, and equity issues on the opportunities and outcomes of underrepresented students. As a trained mixed methodologist, Dr. Ortega aims to inform issues related to intercollegiate athletics, underrepresented students, minority serving institutions (MSIs), and persistence. His most recent research projects include: exploring the recruitment experiences of Latinx college athle,EST how athletic departments interactions can lead to Latinx college athletes intent to graduate, examining Latinx college athletes academic and athletic persistence, and how Latinx executive leaders develop organizational policy identities at Hispanic serving institutions (HSIs).
