About
Dr. Carmen Monico is an Associate Professor in the Joint Master and PhD Social Work Programs of the North Carolina A&T State University and the University of North Carolina Greensboro. Monico's transnational scholarship includes global migration, human trafficking, and community-based research with an emphasis on youth vulnerabilities and resiliency. As a minority scholar in the South in the largest U.S. HBCU, Monico has published extensively on these topics. Monico is a Center for New North Carolinians Fellow and an RTI University Scholar. As a U.S. Fulbright Scholar, Monico conducted research on educational opportunities for youth at risk in Guatemala.
Current Work
My transnational, bilingual (English-Spanish) scholarship has included intercountry adoption (e.g. dissertation on this form of "quiet migration"), global migration (e.g. child-family separation, detention conditions), gender-based violence (e.g. sex trafficking, child trauma), social determinants of health during emergencies, and trauma-informed and resilience-focused care to address personal and community violence. I have academic training and experience with teaching, and conducting community-based research and qualitative methods. In my professional live, I have engaged in community organizing, policy and legislative advocacy, policy analysis and research, networking and public outreach. I have been involved in community planning and evaluation in post-conflict settings.
