Dr. Shuntay Z. Tarver is an assistant professor at Old Dominion University in the department of Counseling and Human Services. She earned her Ph.D. in Human Development and Family Studies from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and her master's degree in social work from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Shuntay Z. Tarver is an emerging scholar committed to conducting culturally relevant, interdisciplinary research. Dr. Tarver has a myriad of experiences with offering strategies for enhancing culturally competent interactions to stakeholders across various disciplinary backgrounds such as education, law enforcement, social work, and human services.
Current Work
Dr. Tarver is committed to social justice and her research agenda has three primary objectives: 1) to advocate for social justice; 2) to unveil the experiences of African Americans within various ecological systems (i.e. schools, justice systems, and families); and 3) to explore the unique intragroup experiences of marginalized populations within society. Collectively, all of Dr. Tarver's research and practice connects the intersections of race, equity, cultural competence, and social justice.
