Dr. Mayra Lopez-Humphreys is an associate professor and director of the BSSW program at the City University of New York, College of Staten Island. Her research focuses on restorative justice approaches with populations involved in the criminal justice system.Currently, she serves as the principal investigator in an academic-community partnership with Community Connections for Youth (CCFY) on a research project that examines peer-mentoring interventions with justice-involved youth and adults. Additionally, her interest in critical multiculturalism has focused on evidence-based interventions and pedagogical approaches in social work education.Her work has appeared in the Journal of Baccalaureate Social Work, Journal of Sociology and Social Welfare, Restorative Justice: An International Journal, and The International Journal of Interdisciplinary Social and Community Studies. She has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in diversity, social welfare policy, and field practice.Dr. Humphreys has 15+ years of non-profit leadership experience in organizational development, program evaluation, and community organizing. She has conducted participatory program design & evaluations for various asset-based interventions, mostly related to afterschool and positive youth development programs.
Current Work
Dr. Lopez-Humphreys's current work focuses on the development and evaluation of a community-based program, the Credible Messengers Institute, which provides training to adults formerly incarcerated who will serve as peer mentors to youth at risk. Dr. Humphreys has collected qualitative data during the 2017-18 academic year, which has been analyzed and is in the process of being submitted for publication, and is in the process of collecting quantitative data.
