About
Dr. Stokes is an associate professor at the University of Michigan-Flint campus, who has over 19 years experience as a faculty member. Her dissertation explored the lived experience of African American nurses who attended PWIs. She continues to research education and equity issues. She has 20+ years of experience as a research team member in CBPR, particularly with the School of Public Health and the Healthy Environments Partnership. Dr. Stokes won the 2015 Nightingale Nursing Excellence Award.
Current Work
Dr. Stokes's is currently involved in several research projects, which include the environment and its impact on health (I.e. cardiovascular, maternal, infant health, obesity, diabetes), CBPR, underrepresented student success, (Un)intentional bias and racism in health care and education, critical race theory/ critical feminist theory. She is also investigating community barriers and resources for patients who desire weight control, and/or with diabetes (+their support persons). Additionally, Dr. Stokes has an ongoing project investigating the lived experience of African American faculty who are employed at and African American students who attend Jesuit Colleges and Universities. She has recently joined the Research Institute for Racial, Economic, & Environmental Justice and serves on the tri-campus Committee on Fairness, Equity, and Inclusion.
