About
Jennifer McClearen is a feminist media scholar whose research examines the cultural production of difference in popular media with a focus on sports and consumer culture. She is an assistant professor of media studies in the Department of Radio-Television-Film at the University of Texas at Austin where she is also affiliated faculty with the Center for Sports Communication and Media and the Center for Media and Entertainment Industries.
Current Work
Dr. McClearen's research agenda focuses on three under-considered areas in the study of women in contemporary sports media: 1) the resurgence of feminist discourse in popular culture, 2) ethnographic inquiry into sports media industries and fan communities, and 3) an intersectional examination of women’s sporting experiences. She seeks to fundamentally shift what “counts” as sports media, which has long been isolated to major media entities like ESPN, Fox Sports, and Sports Illustrated and has under-examined niche websi,EST streaming services, and social media. The central aim of this research is to augment our understanding of sporting contexts that are often left out of our scholarly analysis of women in sports media.
