Dr. Makeda Turner is the owner of Essence 4 Success Consulting, LLC an educational consulting firm that provides academic coaching and support to professional women pursuing an advanced degree. She has many years of experience in higher education, working in various capacities including admissions, advising, and first-year instruction. Dr. Turner is a proud alumnus of Eastern Michigan University, having earned a doctor of philosophy - educational leadership, a master of art - educational leadership & student affairs, and a bachelor of business administration - marketing.
Current Work
Dr. Turner's research examines the long term benefits of summer bridge transition programs on student success, retention, and persistence. Specifically she is interested in researching how sense of belonging, and academic self-efficacy affect student success. She uses qualitative data analysis techniques to examine the lived experiences of students who have succeed in summer transition programs. Her upcoming projects include researching organizational socialization theories and the experiences of summer bridge participants. In addition, Dr. Turner is interested in conducting a longitudinal study of bridge program participants around the nation, and work to understand the benefits of building community in a supportive educational environment for underrepresented students.
