About
Dr. Sarah Liu is currently an assistant professor in the School of Social and Political Science at the University of Edinburgh, United Kingdom. Utilizing mixed methods, her research centers on how political contexts — immigration, women's political representation, and social movements — shape the gender gap in political opinion and behavior. Her research is cross-regional with a particular focus on Asia. She has published in political science journals and been featured in The Washington Post Monkey Cage. Dr. Liu holds a dual PhD in political science and women’s, gender, and sexuality studies from the Pennsylvania State University. Previously, she taught at Newcastle University, Smith College, Penn State. She is the associate editor of Representation: Journal of Representative Democracy.
Current Work
In her current project, Gendering Immigration: Media Framing of Immigration and Public Opinion on the Huddled Masses, Dr. Liu analyzes gender in media framings of immigration and immigrants and the varying media framings’ impacts on citizens’ attitudes toward immigrants. Employing cross-national content analysis and survey experiments, she investigates the gender/gendered differences in the media constructions of immigration and their effects on native citizens’ acceptance of male and female immigrants in Hong Kong, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
