About
Paloma E. Villegas is an assistant professor of sociology at California State University San Bernardino. Her research primarily focuses on the intersections of migration, borders, citizenship, race and gender, primarily in the US and Canada and in relation to Latinx migrants. She also conducts research on social inequality in higher education, focusing on immigration status and food insecurity.
Current Work
Dr. Villegas' scholarship primarily examines how laws and actions lead to the identification of some migrants as "illegal" and how those migrants navigate those experiences of illegallization. Her research in Canada has focused on the ways Mexican migrants have been identified as social threats when they apply for refugee protection (asylum) as well as when they become undocumented. She has also researched access to college for undocumented migrants in Canada. In the US, she is currently conducting research on the effects of immigration status on college students' sense of belonging in higher education and a similar project on the effects of food insecurity on sense of belonging for college students in higher education.
