About
Dr. Shuling Yang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at East Tennessee State University. She teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses in literacy and ESL focus. Her research focuses are family literacy, biliteracy, and teacher preparation. She also focuses on equity issues in race and ethnicity with Asian Americans. In 2021, Dr. Yang was awarded AERA Division C Equity grant and NCTE Research Foundation grant. She won 2021 NCTE Early Career Educator of Color Leadership Award. Dr. Yang has published in Bilingual Research Journal, Journal of Literacy Innovation, Online Learning Journal and she has presented in national and international conferences. Dr. Yang serves on the editorial board of the Reading Horizon Journal and Journal of Literacy and Urban Schools.
Current Work
Currently, Dr. Yang's scholarship explores Asian American parents and students' identity seeking process. Dr. Yang has conducted interviews and surveys with Chinese immigrant parents and the manuscripts are currently under review. Another project Dr. Yang is working now with her preservice teachers focuses on arousing their awareness of diversity and inclusion in their classrooms via multicultural picture books. The majority of her students are white and the institution is in a rural region so this path has its impact in the local communities and schools.
