Matthew Cooney serves as assistant professor of education and director of the interdisciplinary leadership doctoral (INLD) program at Governors State University, a minority serving institution, in University Park, IL. Dr. Cooney conducts research on the career pathways to the college and university presidency and student success initiatives in higher education. He joined the faculty after serving in student affairs roles across the United States. Dr. Cooney earned a B.A in Spanish literature from University of Nevada, Las Vegas, an M.Ed. from Loyola University Chicago in higher education, and a PhD in higher education administration from Bowling Green State University.
Current Work
Dr. Cooney is a higher education scholar who studies the pathways to college and university presidencies. He examines how access to professional development experiences, previous positions, and candidates’ social identities impact their ability to obtain a senior leadership position in post-secondary education. He utilizes a critical perspective to analyze how the current pathways to senior leadership positions exclude qualified candidates from non-traditional personal and professional backgrounds.
