About
Dr. Regula is an educator and advocate who approaches biology with a humility that recognizes that biology is the study of one aspect of life- the material structures- while life also includes aspects such as art, emotions, ethics, and thinking for which we have yet to measure and break down for qualitative study well (and may never be able to do that). He strives to bring a social justice ethic to his teaching and research by highlighting the shortcomings of our current understanding of biology and the discursive nature of science, not to mention that science is but one epistemology among many. Dr. Regula teaches the spectrum of biology instead of discreet or binary forms, often helping students unpack what they have been taught previously, which can be hard for students (and colleagues) to accept and Dr. Regula leaves room for those big emotions, often including skills for emotional regulation as a part of his classes.
Current Work
While Dr. Regula began his studies in biology on the more environmental and ecological side of the discipline, he has since been more in the realm of medical education. Across both of these areas of biology, he has brought a grounding in social justice and grown into the role of both educator and advocate. His current research is firmly rooted in this, as he works collaboratively to document health disparities in Ohio's LGBTQ+ population. He also works within his classroom to help future healthcare professionals understand the importance of and provide quality healthcare to all people and work to dismantle systemic barriers that many people face due to historic injustices.
