About
Josefina Bañales, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor in the Community and Applied Developmental Psychology Area at the University of Illinois, Chicago. Her research examines how racially and ethnically minoritized youth develop beliefs, feelings, and actions that challenge racism (i.e., youth critical racial consciousness development). In collaboration with youth, schools, parents, and community organizations, she co-creates opportunities that facilitate youths’ critical racial consciousness development.
Current Work
Dr. Bañales is dedicated to engaging in research with and for racially/ethnically minoritized youth and their families. In her research, she aims to center youths' voices, visions, and dreams for their lives. Of note, she and her youth, student, and faculty collaborators are co-developing a program with and for Latinx youth to critically explore what it means to be Latinx in the U.S. and their role in advancing racial justice for Latinx communities and other racially/ethnically minoritized communities.
