About
Candice Peters, Ph.D., born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica, is an Assistant Professor of Student Affairs Administration at Appalachian State University. Drawing on Black feminist theories and critical qualitative approaches, she examines the dynamics among Black peoples in the U.S., magnifies the unique realities of Black women faculty, and explores the spiritual wisdoms of the Black diaspora--all within the context of the U.S. academy. Ultimately, Dr. Peters' work contributes to the existing well of social justice scholarship, adding nuanced understandings to the literature.
Current Work
Dr. Peters' scholarship brings to light the roles that power inequities play in shaping educational environments, experiences, and outcomes for racially minoritized and other institutionally excluded populations. Currently, Dr. Peters is working with others to complete a qualitative project, featuring the constructions of joy among Black collegians. Other projects in the pipeline include: the examination of niceness culture and its effects on Black individuals and communities in the academy and the exploration of Black spirituality within the postsecondary context.
