Dr. Christina L. Myers, originally from Columbia, South Carolina, is a three-time graduate of the University of South Carolina, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences with a Minor in Chemistry, a Master of Mass Communication, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Mass Communication. In August 2022, Dr. Myers joined Michigan State University as a tenure-track assistant professor in the School of Journalism.
Dr. Myers is a freelance journalist specializing in the intersection of race, culture, identity, and policy. Her experience includes roles as the Equity Reporter for The State Newspaper, political reporter for The Associated Press, and national desk writer for NBC News Channel. She is affiliated with several professional organizations, including the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC), and the International Communication Association (ICA).
Current Work
Dr. Myers employs qualitative methods to link Critical Race Theory with Mass Communication, providing insights into the intersection of race and media. Her research focuses on how Black experiences are represented, particularly examining implicit racial bias and racist ideologies present in music, sports, and news narratives.
Through her academic efforts, Myers seeks to uplift Black communities by addressing the persistent impact of systemic racism, working to dismantle oppressive structures, amplifying marginalized voices by highlighting their authentic experiences, and fostering critical conversations about race to promote equitable practices. By creating spaces for dialogue, she aspires to cultivate a more inclusive academic environment.
