Kelly R. Allen is an Assistant Professor of Curriculum Studies in the College of Education and Human Development at Augusta University. Kelly’s research explores hip hop as a Black liberatory praxis and she is the co-author of the book Teaching for Liberation: On Freedom Dreaming in the Field of Hip-Hop Education. Beyond this, she is co-Editor-In-Chief of the Journal of Hip-Hop and Education and her work has been published in a number of edited book volumes and journals including Urban Education, Race Ethnicity and Education, and Equity & Excellence. Kelly is also co-editor of Advancing Critical Praxis and Pedagogy Across Educational Settings, an edited volume that centers the voices of over 37 community partners, teachers, and researchers to illuminate the complex realities of partnerships between school communities and institutions of higher education.
Current Work
Dr. Kelly R. Allen’s work aims to illuminate the transformative power of hip-hop in educational spaces. Allen intentionally challenges traditional educational approaches and aims to center hip-hop to create more inclusive learning environments, particularly for Black students. Allen is interested in the way individuals’ identities and lived experiences influences the way they think about and interact with hip-hop in educational spaces, and aims to center the voices of Black students and teachers in her work. Allen is particularly interested in trap music and trap feminist approaches, and continually aims to bridge academic research with practical educational approaches in the pursuit of more equitable and meaningful educational experiences.
