About
Emily Krechel is the Director of New Student Programs at Elon University. She earned her B.A. in Sociology from James Madison University, M.S. in Student Affairs in Higher Education from Miami University, and Ph.D. in Higher Education from UNC Greensboro. As a critical scholar and educator, she draws on critical race theory (Crenshaw et al., 1995) and racialized organizations (Ray, 2019) to examine inequities she has seen, experienced, and contributed to as a White, queer woman. These frameworks shape how she collaborates to understand and transform systems impacting the student experience to achieve justice. Her research focuses on racial structures in academia and how universities perpetuate these systems through socialization processes.
Current Work
Dr. Krechel’s research explores how white supremacy, as a racialized social system, shapes the experiences of Students of Color at predominantly white institutions, focusing on first-year seminars and overall campus life. Using critical race theory and qualitative methods, she examines the lived experiences of students through interviews. Her findings reveal that first-year seminars often fail to support Students of Color effectively, instead reinforcing environments that demand assimilation into white norms. Dr. Krechel’s work highlights the urgent need for higher education institutions to address systemic inequities embedded in their structures, particularly as student demographics grow more diverse. By amplifying the voices of marginalized students, her research illuminates the pervasive influence of racialized systems in higher education and advocates for structural change to advance racial equity and justice.
