Current Work
Dr Martin is currently researching educational trauma, or the harms schools can do to individuals. She personally experienced trauma in school, which caused her to be drawn to alternative education. She theorized that the students in this system were much like her--misunderstood and misrepresented. Dr. Marin's educational trauma ultimately caused selective mutism. She effectively lost her voice because of her experiences in elementary school. She did not recover her voice for years--until she was in her 40s perusing her Ph.D. Dr. Martin is researching the causes for students disconnection from school. e.g., cultural disconnects based upon race, gender, sexuality, socioeconomic status, etc.
