About
Dr. Michael Steven Williams is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Educational Leadership & Policy Analysis at the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Missouri. His research program broadly focuses on inclusion, diversity, equity, the social-psychological development of students, and institutional excellence in American postsecondary education. Specifically, he centers his inquiry on two aspects of higher education: (a) interpersonal relationships, particularly socialization and mentoring for students, administrators, and faculty, and (b) the institution, focusing on organizational improvement and accountability through multi-pronged assessment and evaluation.
Current Work
Dr. Williams studies how students, teachers, and staff feel like they belong and grow in college. His research focuses on how relationships and school systems affect people, especially those from underrepresented groups. Right now, he's looking at how mentoring and support in science and math impact these students, including the extra emotional work they often do to fit in. He also studies how colleges can improve by using fair and thoughtful ways to measure success. His goal is to find ways for colleges to be better places where everyone has a real chance to succeed.
