William D. Lopez, who received his PhD from the School of Public Health, studies the psychosocial health effects of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids on undocumented immigrants, their families, and their communities, which often consist of people with various immigration statuses. He is also beginning to examine the intersection of criminal and immigration law — such as the extent to which racial profiling is occurring during traffic stops. Lopez's professional work also includes advancing public dissemination and engagement of diversity scholarship.
L. Trenton S. Marsh received his PhD from New York University's Steinhardt School of Education. Marsh examines how no-excuses urban charter schools' philosophies about success inform the everyday practices of teachers, and the implications for working-class students and their families. He also will be partnering with youth and families connected to U-M's Wolverine Pathways and the Center for the Study of Black Youth in Context to empower middle- and high-school students to build critical consciousness, and excel in school, college, and future careers.
